I thank you very kindly for your words. These days I'm not all too favored on dA, simply because I'm doing my very best to piss people off. It's good to know that there are people like you that understand what I'm trying to say.
The main reason why I support your intentions of pissing off people in an attemp to make them change is because I was as bad as a Sonic recolor around 2 or 3 yeears. And now when I look back at my recolor days, I just feel guilty for all that I did back then.
But what actually made me change was actually, the worst of deviant art topic in the Vanilla forums of YouChewPoop before they were closed. (Around 2007), after watching the worst of deviant art topic, I just felt bad, guilty, and angry for creating such a thing as a recolor.
Just thinking about anything I did when I had that recolor sickens, and it sickens me to see people I used to know back then, still has recolors. Even you posted one of them in YouChew (I think it was Edward or some shit like that).
That's why I support your intentions, because I know and even felt how awful having a recolor is.
Well, think of it as though you were practicing at that time. Unlike the others, you've opened up and seen that there's more to art than seeing something in a different color. Don't feel terrible about your past in the category, because many of us have been there before. I can honestly say that when I was younger I've made those mistakes. The thing is we progress when we feel it's time, and our abilities can only get better through experience. YCP might have shown the light, but it's truly you who understands that things must change.
Well, I didn't actually draw since I had (and still don't have) any actual drawing skill at all, I cannot even get a stick figure right. But, back then when I had that recolor I was deep into spriting. So the recolor was born of sprites, and not actual art.
Since I stopped having that recolor, I actually though of an actual original character: A mexican magician that can pull anything he wants out of a magical sombrero, as long as he knows the right command to make it appear, if he gets the command wrong or it doesn't exist, a giant white ghostly fist comes out of the sombrero and punches him in the face. The commands are done by moving a wand creating a command wich is somehow related to the thing that he wants to get.
The way I started learning how to draw was by observing everything and imagining it on paper. You have to know what you want to see in order to make it happen. If you're still in school, take art classes. I've drawn ever since I was in kindergarten, making shitty comic books and whatnot.
